A very helpful introduction on the topic whether you are Asian or a non-Asian. I commend and recommend DJ as a friend, colleague, and brother to speak and inform with authenticity as well as authority on the topics that relate to Asian American Christianity. DJ's personal history, experiences, and the spheres of influence serve the readers and followers well since he stays on top of the current trends in the church and the culture. This book contains a ton of researched material and existing models of different ministry contexts that are helpful tools in assessing where you are and aligning the direction of ministry that keeps in step with the Holy Spirit and the changing world.

I appreciated a window into what God's been doing through Asian-American churches and their faithful leaders/members (spoiler: a lot). Packed with stats, case studies, and thoughtful analysis throughout, Chuang's book concludes by casting a vision for what the future of Christ's church could be as it embraces the true strength of its multiethnic diversity to serve not only America but also the entire global village. Note: I was given a copy of this book for review purposes and was not required to provide a positive review.

As an Asian-American pastor, my first thought was how helpful this book would be to so many other Asian-American pastors and churches trying to navigate the many questions they face, especially about what ministry should look like for the next generation. DJ covered many helpful topics (history, demographics, church models, leadership, etc.) and cast a vision for what Asian-Americans churches and leaders can do as our nation becomes more diverse. This is a great resource, drawn from decades of experience. I have some pastor friends I'll be recommending this book to.

Enlightening and insightful book! The book gave words to my experience and provided a sociological overview of the Asian American church experience, which is fascinating. I also appreciate that the book cast a vision for how believers can reach Asian Americans, or Multiasians, in today’s diversity.

While I expected this book to focus more on multi-ethnic or pan-Asian churches, it actually gave a broad perspective on the current status of all types of Asian American and ethnic Asian churches. DJ gives answers to the questions those of us who work with these churches constantly wrestle with. Why do we need “Multi Asian” or Asian American churches? What are the different models utilized by these churches and which is the best for my context? What are the unique strengths, opportunities and needs of these churches in their many forms? How can we adapt to grow into the future in an ever changing society?

The part that resonated the to me the most discussed the importance of cultural contextualization of the Gospel:

“Some pastors say, “We just need churches that preach the Gospel and leave the results up to God.” Yes, absolutely, we need Gospel-preaching churches. And, we need to realize that everything speaks: what and how we preach, the communication style and language used, how we choose and sing the worship songs, the way we relate, the decor of the worship center, and so much more. There’s a lot going on in a church than merely its statement of beliefs or doctrines. Some church leaders like to quote, “The message never changes, but methods can change.” My encouragement here is to be thoughtful and strategic on how your church does its ministry in order to evaluate your ministry effectiveness. And when something is not effective, be willing to make changes. We want churches that are both faithful and fruitful.”

DJ gives a broad perspective on where we are and where we are going in the future. This will surely be an important book to take us forward into the next generation of Asian American churches.

Multi.Asian Church is a readable, helpful doorway into a theater of ministry overdue for careful study: reaching and ministering to the millions of Asian-Americans that live in the West. D.J. Chuang has assembled an impressive foundation of research to underscore his basic premise: Asian-American Christians have played, and continue to play, significant roles in how God is building His multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Body of Christ in the English-speaking world, particularly in the U.S.

Following an overview of Asian-American Christianity, Chung explores the facets of Asian-American outreach, ministry, and church-growth expressions. He takes us through the various models of the Asian-American Church, examines the cultural distinctives that shape Asian-American faith and practice, and offers a number of case studies that illustrate how God has built and continues to build distinctively Asian-American and multi-cultural church plants, congregations, and networks.

Chung acknowledges the complexities of outreach and ministry to cultures that include generational as well as ethnic distinctives. He is honest in describing the struggles faced by many leaders in Asian-American ministry, and does not try to provide pat answers. But he does offer encouraging templates of churches and ministries that have launched, survived, grown, and thrived in complex environments.

If you are an Asian-American believer, you will find yourself nodding in agreement with Chung as he recounts perspectives and experiences familiar to your experience. And if you are new to the Asian-American ministry context, you will find Multi.Asian Church a valuable primer to help you to engage a dynamic and growing component of our universal Christian family.

This book speaks to the heart of anyone seeking to see how Asian Americans have a place in the multiethnic tapestry of glorifying God. God is desiring the nations to know Him - this book is a must-have concerning Missio Dei (the mission of God) to redeem all peoples to Himself.
